Well here I am much older than when I started. A huge gap in one medium of creativity, like 30 years ffs. Picked up a pencil and pad at a young age. My mom had a talent she never pursued nor acknowledged. At least to me. I wanted to draw horses like hers. Later in my early teens I took my first art class and yup I was hooked. It fit my personality for sure, a bit schizophrenic, definitely a square peg trapped inside my own head. From there I went to the state university and decided to major in fine art. More than a couple of professors (no not seducers) encouraged me to continue on. One even gave me a B in my first semester as a warning that I didn’t apply myself to the gift I was given. But sometimes its the wrong place or time in life. I went on and did some graphic design and painting professionally but never really applied myself. Hmmm, where did I hear that before??? Then I picked up my dad’s camera again. Hadn’t played with it in a decade. And that was it. The camera allowed me to learn about light, proportion and composition. Little did I know that the success I achieved as a photo-artist would make me a better painter decades later?
So here we are. You wondering what this journey is about. You know I really am not sure yet. I just know its been a long and tangled journey to get to the beginning again. If my words and photos can give you a laugh, some advice or just knowing you aren’t alone in your aloneness then its successful! Come along. Join me on this trip to who knows where. I will introduce you to some amazing artists you may or may not know. Hopefully provide some great links to tips and inspiration. And mostly bring to light what it is like to sit in front of an easel or pad staring at a blank page wondering WTF am I doing here? Haha!!
Here is a photo of My most recent completed painting Alice in Oz. The next post will be my newest painting Monalot Fontaine, a New Orleans Drag Queen. 48” x 48” and the stages to get there.
