The Gal in the Background Making it all Happen
As time passes change occurs. In my world I veered away from large, formal weddings, concentrating on elopements and smaller, intimate affairs with a non-traditional style.
Several years ago I photographed Brittany and Matt's wedding. I didn't know at the time but she was also a photographer concentrating more on events.
We totally hit it off, well I hope so! I can be a royal pain in the ass and that is probably an understatement. I asked her if she would consider working as my lighting assistant on the bigger weddings. For several years we worked together, occasionally adding in my husband. And let me be clear and honest up front. I really am difficult to work with. Most of the larger weddings have very tight timelines so there isn't much time for setting up and testing when working in multiple locations. Many locations here in New Orleans are really cool inside but poorly lit without any thought put into ambient light and the needs of a photographer to focus so, yes, many are real challenges and require extended time to set up in order to light the room the way I want. No matter how difficult the situation might be and shall we say, perfectionist the photographer can be, Brittany remained calm and patient. Sadly, as I have changed my business model we only get to work together a few times a year.
So this is my thank you girl. Great job covering my tush, figuring out in the heat of the moment how to solve a lighting situation and most of all getting me that caffeine I so NEED!!! A photographer's assistant does not have a glamorous job. Lugging heavy equipment, setting up lighting, feeding the photographer, so many thankless tasks. Even after all these years when I am in need Brittany is there to save the show!
This is a grab shot I took as we were testing the light to create the portraits below.
