You might ask what is a traditional portrait. Typically it is a thoughtfully set up, posed session, often performed in a studio. And what makes portrait art different? In my world it is an environmental portrait, meaning the photographs are taken outside or in a specific interior environment rather than a photographic studio. Images are a bit more relaxed with a creative touch. Clients are looking for a more relaxed and honest representation of themselves rather than a stiff, manipulated pose. I work with my subjects, helping them relax. As that manifests the images become more real portraits exposing the heart and soul of the subject.
While these images may be camera-aware they still maintain an honesty because the subject is in charge of how they are represented rather than me telling them exactly what to do. Not that I don't help with advice and suggestions for your best presentation. It just is not forced or painful as some folks just aren't comfortable in front of the camera. Usually because they think they aren't photogenic. They are, we just take more time to chill and get comfortable. Clients feel comfortable and trust me.
